Description | Settlement examination of George Cunningham. He was born at Ghent in Flanders, and his father was Peter Cunningham, a soldier in the 25th Regiment of Foot commanded by the Earl of Rothes. His mother was Jane Mowndough, Peter's lawful wife. At the age of about three years, he was brought to England by his parents with the regiment. They landed at Portsmouth and then went to Edinburgh, where his father lived for 21 years as an invalid. When he was about 15 years old, Cunningham engaged himself to a miner at Lead Hills in Clydesdale in Scotland, and stayed there until about two years ago, when he was injured by blasting as a miner and lost the use of his arm. Once he was disabled, he gathered rags for a year, but since then, he has been a vagrant |
