DescriptionAffidavit of John Leefe of New Malton brazier. At the Quarter Sessions held at Easingwold on 9 January 1787, Leefe preferred an indictment against Elizabeth wife of William Baines late of the city of York menial servant for obtaining an iron smoothing box and two iron heaters from him by false pretences

Baines was apprehended in November 1790 and is now in custody in the House of Correction at Northallerton in order to take her trial at the present Sessions. Richard Hill, a material witness for the prosecution is now believed to be in Switzerland, but is expected to return soon
