Description | Letter from Jonas Brown at Newton House to Thomas Ewbank at Malton relating to the appointment of John Calvert as inspector of weights and balances in the liberty of Whitby and Whitby Strand. When Calvert attended the last Quarter Sessions to be sworn in, he was told that an Act of Parliament appointed the Chief Constable or any other persons that he might depute. Calvert was therefore not sworn in. Had Brown been told of this, he would have attended the Sessions, although his health was then precarious and he was nearly 80 years old, and unable to travel in the inclement weather. Calvert is the person that he would recommend and depute; he is an honest man and stands high in the estimation of those for whom he receives rents and transacts business
A set of standard weights has been sent to Whitby. They will be heavy and may need to be carried in a cart with two horses and two men. The townships are about 25 miles apart at the extremities, and the roads are very rugged and indifferent
