He says he was born at Dalkieth in Scotland and was bound apprenticed as a sailor for 7 years to Mr Ogilby of Leith a ship owner and merchant. He served all his apprenticeship and then was impressed into the navy in about 1780. He was a seaman for 22 years and was discharged about four years ago at Plymouth. When he was apprehended at New Malton he was on his way to Yarmouth to receive prize money due to him from the 'Mars', a 74-gun ship commanded about 7 years ago by Captain Alexander Hood
