TitlePetition of John Craven
DescriptionPetition of John Craven a native of Leicester tallow chandler. He served in the Royal Artillery for over 13 years, mostly in the West Indies. He was discharged "at the reducement" at his own request, but could not find employment in Leicester. He was going to Newcastle, but through drinking too heavily he assaulted Mr Foster farmer of Tholthorpe near Myton, for which he was sentenced to six months' hard labour. He was unable to find sureties for good behaviour as he was a stranger in these parts and his friends had died when he was two years old. Because of his want of bail, he has been in prison for a further 13 weeks. He has seen the impropriety of his conduct and intends to lead an honest and sober life in the future
