DescriptionPapers relating to the diversion and stopping up of a highway at East Layton, leading from the turnpike road from Catterick to Greta Bridge through the village of West Layton to Hutton, Caldwell and elsewhere; beginning at a point on the highway 150 yards to the south of the south-east corner of John Easton's mansion house and ending on the highway about 130 yards to the north of the north-east corner of a pond adjoining the highway in the farm occupied by John and Barker Powell; and another part of the same highway leading to the village of East Layton. Includes:

- file of papers including:
a) notice dated 1 July 1869 given by John Easton to the Highway Board of the Richmond Highway District of his wish to divert the highway

b) consent dated 1 July 1869 of John Easton of Layton Manor to the diversion of the highway through his land

c) notice dated 3 July 1869 given by the Highway Board of the Richmond Highway District to the parish or township of West Layton that they have received the notice given by John Easton of his wish to divert the highway, and that the inhabitants of West Layton should be assembled in vestry and the notice submitted to them

d) notice dated 24 July 1869 given by the churchwarden and overseers of West Layton that a public vestry meeting of the inhabitants of West Layton is to be held at the house of Ann Lodge called Ravensworth Lodge in the township of West Layton on 31 July 1869 to consider the diversion of the highway

e) resolution of a public vestry meeting held on 31 July 1869 approving the diversion and stopping-up of the highway

f) application dated 7 August 1869 of the Highway Board for the Richmond Highway District to two Justices to view the highway in to be diverted in West Layton

g) order to the Highway Board dated 9 August 1869 from two Justices that they have viewed the highway to be diverted, and that notices are to be put up to say that an application for the diversion is to be made at the next Quarter Sessions

h) notice dated 11 August 1869 given by the Chairman and Surveyor of the Highway Board to the parish or township of West Layton that application is to be made at the next Quarter Sessions for the diversion of a highway in West Layton

i) affidavit dated 7 September 1869 of Miles George Booty of Richmond gentleman relating to the above notice

j) affidavit dated 7 September 1869 of John Swinney of Ouston Colliery near Chester le Street I n county Durham land surveyor relating to the above notice

- plan dated 9 August 1869 of the highway to be diverted and stopped-up

- copies of the Richmond and Ripon Chronicle dated 14 August 1869, 21 August 1869, 28 August, and 4 September 1869, containing a notice relating to the diversion of the highway at West Layton

- certificate dated 7 September 1869 of two Justices that they have viewed the highway to be diverted and have found it straighter and more level than the old one, which may be stopped-up

- application dated 20 October 1869 for an order confirming the certificate of the Justices for the diversion and stopping-up of portions of the highway in the township of East Layton
