DescriptionDraft letter from the deputy Clerk of the Peace to the Rt Hon R.A. Cross M.P., Secretary of State at the Home Office, relating to an application by James Bull for the remission of his estreated recognizances. Bull was charged on 19 February 1874 before the Justices for the borough of Middlesbrough for causing a breach of the peace in Newport Road. Bull was unable to provide sureties and was committed to the House of Correction on 19 February 1874. The sureties were later found and he was released on 7 March 1874, but on 30 March 1874 he was again committed by the Justices for the borough of Middlesbrough for three separate offences. While he was in prison, the recognizances which had been entered into in March were forfeited and estreated and on his release from prison he was taken into custody by the sheriff and held in York Castle
