With certificate of conviction at the Quarter Sessions held at Northallerton on 18 October 1881 of Noah Coates for breaking into the dwelling house of Thomas Smurthwaite and stealing 3s 6d, one basket, one locket and a quantity of potatoes, the property of the said Thomas Smurthwaite. Coates, who had a previous conviction for felony, was sentenced to hard labour at the prison at Northallerton for nine calendar months. Certificate dated 29 March 1884
