DescriptionSettlement examination of Nathaniel Cole, a wandering vagrant apprehended in the constabulary of Bedale. He was born in South Carolina and served an apprenticeship to a ship carpenter. He came to England and worked at Lancaster as a shipwright for eight years. After that, he went to Hull and worked at his trade with Benjamin Blades for four years. About 22 months ago he had dropsy, and about six months ago he left Hull and travelled via Malton to Kirby Moorside, where he stayed for a month travelling around. Three weeks ago he left Helmsley, and was at Northallerton for two nights, then came to Bedale. He was there for one day and asked for charity, and got 4s. He was married Mary Smith about 13 years ago at Burton in Kendal in Westmorland and has three children by her, two girls and a boy. They are with his wife's mother, Mary Smith widow, at Lielsoel near Perth in Cumberland [Little Salkeld near Penrith?]
