Description | Settlement examination of James Thompson a rogue and vagabond. He was born in Gascoyne Street in Plymouth and was bred a seaman. He went to sea with his father when he was very young, but never served an apprenticeship. He served on board ships-of-war for several years. He was discharged from on-board the "Rose" frigate about seven years ago at Sheerness, and has since learned to mend shoes. In January 1792 he left Portsmouth and travelled to Newcastle upon Tyne to see his brother, who he found out when he got there, had sailed in a merchant ship. He worked as a mender of shoes in different places. He came from Newcastle upon Tyne about six weeks ago, and was going home to Plymouth when he was apprehended at Snainton, ten miles west of Scarborough |
