He was born at Wicklow in Ireland and bound apprentice to Captain Hopkin Harris of Dublin to serve as a seaman for seven years. He served about five years of his apprenticeship, and in 1745 he was impressed on board the "Royal Sovereign" ship-of-war at the Nore. Afterwards he served on the "Raven" a sloop-of-war, and has since served on different ships-of-war and in the Merchant Service.
