TitleLetter relating to service as a juror
DescriptionLetter from William Swales at Whitby to Mr R Smithson attorney at Malton. He believed himself to be exempt from serving on a jury. He is over 65 years of age, and very infirm, being so lame that he could not get out of his house when he was summoned. He also has a freehold estate of about £200 a year, and is a younger Brother of Trinity House, Deptford Strand, London. If a ship-of-war was off the port of Whitby and he was summoned to go on board as a pilot, he cannot refuse to do so except in a case of illness. He is too lame to ride to the Sessions. He hopes for all these reasons to be excused the fine for non-attendance
