DescriptionPass dated 16 May 1786 of John Campbell, son of James Campbell deceased, eminent physician in London. John Campbell was born deaf and dumb, but is able to understand and cure diseases of any kind. He is aged 31 years, 5 feet 10 inches tall, of fresh complexion, and with red hair

With undated written examination of John Campbell, including the information that he can converse by signs and symbols, and is not a freemason. Campbell asks for word to be sent to his wife in Castleton, hoping that the parish will maintain her and her children, and insists that his pass is genuine. He is told that if he does not give a better account of himself, he will be sent to the House of Correction
