On 28 July 1798 a writ of latitat had been issued commanding the sheriff of Yorkshire to take Thomas Coates to appear in court at Westminster to answer John Thompson in a plea of trespass. The sheriff issued a warrant to Masterman to apprehend Coates, which he did on 23 August
