DescriptionBill of indictment of Thomas Coates yeoman, Robert Coates innholder, Jane Clawson wife of Thomas Clawson schoolmaster, Elizabeth Coates spinster, and Margaret Coates spinster, all late of the parish of Great Smeaton, for riotously assembling and assaulting Thomas Masterman a bailiff and rescuing Thomas Coates from his custody

On 28 July 1798 a writ of latitat had been issued commanding the sheriff of Yorkshire to take Thomas Coates to appear in court at Westminster to answer John Thompson in a plea of trespass. The sheriff issued a warrant to Masterman to apprehend Coates, which he did on 23 August

Offence committed at the parish of Great Smeaton on 23 August 1798
