TitleSettlement examination: Charles Mackenzie
DescriptionExamination of Charles Mackenzie who says he was born at Kingston in Jamaica and came to England 28 years ago and brought with him £500 which he used in trade as a travelling hawker and pedlar until about three or four years ago. Since then, he has travelled about the country selling godly books and laces until Sunday 11 May 1800 when he was found by Richard Coates of Thornton begging in company with a woman and a boy of about six years old. The woman and the boy escaped by Mackenzie was apprehended. He says he has never done anything to gain a settlement in England, but he has been twice in the workhouse at Leeds. The first time was for two years, and he left it six years ago, and was admitted to the workhouse about 18 months afterwards, since when he has been travelling and selling the godly books and laces
