Laing was born in Fifeshire in North Britain. When he was about 13 years old he was apprenticed to a gardener in Cupar in Fifeshire for three years, after which he went to work at Brentford in Middlesex with the Duke of Northumberland. Afterwards he was hired by Charles Manningham of Dorking in Surrey and after about five years he got married. He has done nothing to gain a settlement elsewhere
