DescriptionBill of indictment of Joseph Johnson late of the House of Correction at Northallerton labourer for obtaining five guineas from Robert Kirby by falsely pretending to Robert Kirby that he was agent for Thomas Wilson of 24 Lincoln's Inn Field's, London, and produced a letter signed by Wilson to the effect that he should be advanced up to £20 in money from the account of Thomas Wilson should it be needed during his stay in Stockton. Johnson also pretended to Kirby, who was cashier and principal clerk in the Malton and Whitby Bank at Whitby, that he had purchased a ship called the Minerva lying in Whitby harbour on Wilson's behalf, producing a promissory note for five guineas and requesting an advance of the same amount
