TitlePetition against allowing expenses of special constables during recent elections at Northallerton
DescriptionPetition signed by 64 inhabitants of the townships of Northallerton, Brompton and Romanby, who believe that an application will be made to the Justices to defray the expenses of a great number of special constables appointed during the recent election for the borough of Northallerton, which would have the effect of increasing the county rate. People's conduct during the election was decent, orderly and peaceable and there was no reason to expect any disturbance. Because of their previous conduct in life, some of the special constables seemed more likely to create a disturbance than to help keep the peace, and some wore the colours or favours of one of the candidates in their hats and coats. Had the usual authorities of chief constables, petty constables coroners etc been called upon, it would have prevented any extra expense. Calling out special constables when there were no disturbances was unnecessary and the cost ought not to be borne by the inhabitants of the Riding
