TitleReport on damage at Brompton on Swale
DescriptionA memorial of the inhabitants of Brompton on Swale was referred to a committee who inspected the bridge on 26 May 1833 and have made a report. A heavy flood in Brompton Beck carried away part of an occupation road belonging to Mr Arrowsmith from the right bank of the stream. It was feared that the approach to the county bridge from the Richmond side would be damaged, and the public highway destroyed, and in trying to prevent this, the Bridge Surveyor carried a substantial breastwork of stone fastened with iron clamps onto Mr Arrowsmith's land. Mr Arrowsmith objected to Mr Atkinson's work because the road which he made for Mr Arrowsmith was not as wide as it was, and he wishes it to be wider. The damage was done by the flood and the Bridge Surveyor was entitled by law to secure the bridge, although he has encroached on private property to do so. As the Bridge Surveyor's work included making a road for Mr Arrowsmith, it is ample compensation for what he (Arrowsmith) considers to be an injury to private property

Draft summary of the report of the committee to whom the memorial of the inhabitants of Brompton on Swale was referred, confirming that there was no legal claim on the Riding as no injury had been done by the Bridge Surveyor
