The "Franklin Dead Brief Society" was established to provide funds for the burial of members and their wives. At a meeting held on 16 June 1836 at the New Globe Inn in Malton, Papworth proposed to Robert Shepherd president of the society that William Dawson labourer of George Street, York aged 38 years should be admitted as a member. On 13 August 1836 John Harrison steward and John Sanderson treasurer of the society received a letter supposedly from Anne Dawson widow of William Dawson saying that her husband was dead and the money due from the society was to be given to John Papworth. Papworth thus obtained £5 12s 6d, although no such person as William Dawson had ever been a member of the society
