- copy order dated 20 June 1842 for the removal of John Webster and Ellen his wife from the township of Newton on Ouse to the township of Earswick. Includes: i) copy settlement examination dated 20 June 1842 of John Webster now living in the township of Newton on Ouse labourer. He is 41 years old and was born at Newton on Ouse, but thinks he belongs to Earswick. About 23 or 24 years ago he was hired at Martinmas to Seth Lazenby of Earswick farmer for a year at £8 per year wages and he slept at his master's house for the whole year, except when he broke his collar bone at harvest time and was absent at home for four weeks and a day or two. He has not gained any settlement since then. He married about seven weeks ago. He was hired at Martinmas day and received a godspenny. Thomas Wells of York butcher also lived at Seth Lazenby's. Lazenby died the same year ii) copy complaint of William Cass one of the overseers of the poor of the township of Newton on Ouse that John Webster and Ellen his wife have come to live in Newton on Ouse, but are not legally settled there, although they have received relief iii) copy notice dated 24 June 1842 that Webster and his wife will be removed unless there is an appeal
- notice dated 1 October 1842 given by the overseers of the poor of the township of Earswick to the churchwardens and overseers of the poor of the township of Newton on Ouse, of their intention to appeal against the removal of John Webster and Ellen his wife, and giving grounds for the appeal |
