With certificate of conviction of John Ward late of the House of Correction at Northallerton labourer for stealing ten silver coins called shillings, 20 silver coins called sixpences, 100 copper coins called halfpennies, and one copper coin called a farthing, the property of James Hayes at the township of Brompton. Ward was convicted at the Quarter Sessions held at Northallerton on 17 October 1843 and was sentenced to hard labour in the House of Correction at Northallerton for three calendar months.
