Johnson had previously been convicted of felony at the Quarter Sessions held at Northallerton on 29 June 1852

With certificate of conviction at the Quarter Sessions held at Northallerton on 29 June 1852 of Charles Johnson late of the House of Correction at Northallerton for stealing one umbrella, the property of William Clarkson, and one other umbrella, the property of Rebecca Gray on 19 May 1852. Johnson was sentenced to hard labour at the House of Correction at Northallerton for one calendar month. Certificate dated 4 January 1853
