Description | Bill of indictment of Rebecca Davies for obtaining one black cloth jacket, eight yards of black silk six and three-quarter yards of brown poplin, seven yards of black silk fringe, and one dozen black glass buttons from John Braithwaite by falsely pretending to him that a letter as follows:- "Bedale November 7 1871 from Mrs Knowles stationer to Mr Braithwait draper. Will you be as kind as send me 8 yards of black silk at about 4d a yard with my neice Miss Knowls as I have not time to come myself she also wants a new jacket if you have one likely as she goin to stay hear as a boarder at Miss Armitages school I have her in looking after you also might send me 5 yards of plad for two little frocks and some patterns of alpacca such as I should want to wear in afternoon dress I will call on Fryday pay you for them all you may inclose a bill with Miss Knowls. I remain yours truly Mrs Knowles stationer" was a genuine letter signed by Margaret Hannah Knowles wife of Henry Knowles stationer and bookseller in Bedale
