DescriptionMemorandum of summary conviction dated 19 January 1874 of Joseph Stephenson of the borough of Middlesbrough pawnbroker for refusing on 13 January 1874 at the borough of Middlesbrough to deliver a shawl which Mary Fidgeon wife of Arthur Fidgeon of the borough of Middlesbrough shingle had pawned on 28 October 1873, and for which she had tendered the loan and profit due

Notice dated 24 January 1874 given by Joseph Stephenson the younger of 44 and 46 Denmark Street, Middlesbrough, pawnbroker to Edward Williams esquire and George Watson esquire two Justices of the Peace for the borough of Middlesbrough and Arthur Fidgeon of 46 Bulman Street, Middlesbrough, shingler and Mary his wife that he intends to enter an appeal at the next Quarter Sessions against his conviction on 19 January 1874 for refusing to deliver to Mary Fidgeon a shawl which she had pawned on 28 October 1873, when she had paid the money due on 13 January 1874. The grounds of his appeal are that on 24 December 1873 the shawl was destroyed by fire and Stephenson had offered compensation. He had been ordered to pay 10s, but should have been ordered to pay that amount less 5s which was the amount for which it had been pawned and 41/2d which was his profit
