Description | Memorial to the magistrates from the Barnard Castle Local Board of Health for the adoption of Thorngate footbridge as a county bridge. A bridge was built in Queen Elizabeth's time to replace a ford and stepping stones, but as its position was less convenient than the ford, people continued to use that. A footbridge was built by public subscription, but it was destroyed in the flood of 9 March 1881. A further public subscription led to a new iron bridge being built, and it is this that should become a county bridge
