Andrew Scote of Whiteby [Whitby], Geoffrey Penoke, William Penoke, Richard Penoke, Alexander de Cotn, William de Lith de Whiteby, Thomas son of Henry de Whitebi, John Oriol, Thomas de Puntesse, Robert de Holo, Gabriel de Doure, Robert Cragge, Richard Page, Ralph Padilde, Michael Dellebierd and Peter de Hithe to answer Agnes de Vesci in a plea why they carried away goods to the value of £200
They pleaded charters of King Henry and King John which granted to the Abbot of Whitby the privileges which the churches of St John of Beverley, and of St Wilfred of Ripon held They say they should not have been impleaded, being all men of the liberty of the Abbot of Whitby and at the last visit of the Justices Itenerant, the men of the Abbey were only impleaded within the liberty of the Abbey Ordered that William de Northburth and John de Rigate should accede to the liberty and determine the case Sheriff ordered to issue writ and they made their appearance Records of Michaelmas 6 Edward I, Worcester
Jonathan le Forester, Adam Dogge, William de Linc attached to reply to John Hersannde in a similar plea that he has distrained on their ploughbeasts and sheep, to damage of £20 Hersannde replied that he ought not to be impleaded because the Abbot had liberty by charters etc Examined by Arthur Agard, one of the clerks of the chamber 20 November 1605
Plea of Quo Warranto before John de Vallibz and the Justices Itinerant at York Morr Trinity 7 Edw son of King Henry The Abbot of Whitby made answer claiming wreck of the sea - sets out the bounds of the liberty: from the port of Whitby as far as Blawyk, then to Grenedik and along Grenedik to Swynestiescagh, and so to Thornley and all Thornley, as far as Kyrkelac, and so to Capkeldebrok and Theofuesdikes, and as far as Steyncrossegate which is in Suffeild, and as far as Gretchoneld, and so to Claycroste and up the middle of the Moss and so to Derwent and by the middle of the Derwent to the source thereof and so to Lillacros and Scogreuehoghes, and to Dylehon and as far as Lithbec and from there to the Esk and up the middle of the Esk to the water of Brochelbec and so to Swarthouthelcros as far as Horlecrofte and so to Thordisa to the sea and by the shore to Whyteby and forest chase in all the lands of William de Roseles called Heselbek 14 May 1610
